French Canadian singer Megan Louise relocated to L.A., joined by keyboardist Johnny Jewel (Chromatics, Glass Candy). She delivers moody, sexy tunes with French nonchalance and just played at the Hollywood Cemetery. We love “Black Latex” from her 2022 album Escape.

MAREUX

LA-based Mareux found a cult following mixing dark Synth-Pop, Post-Punk and Goth. He just played Coachella and his breakthrough is “The Perfect Girl”, a cover of a Cure song.

MODERNS

This Synth-Pop duo has been releasing contagious singles and EPs since 2017 including “Figuratives”.

NOISEGUN

Based in Long Beach, French American artist delivers English and French Synth-Pop songs, including the catchy single “Pulsation”. A fan of French Coldwave, Minimal Wave and Dream Pop, he has new songs coming up in 2025.

NUEVO TESTAMENTO

This trio specializes in catchy Italo-Disco tunes, which means dancefloor oriented Synth-Pop somewhere between Madonna and New Wave. Listen to “Heat” from the album Love Lines.

RIKKI

A Goth-Punk from San Francisco, Rikki is now producing glossy Synth-Pop tunes in LA, having recently played Goldenvoice’s Goth festival Cruel World in Pasadena. Listen to “Napoleon” from her eponymous album.

These are just a few examples of Los Angeles-based synthpop artists. The city has a diverse and ever-evolving music scene, so you’re likely to discover many more talented artists and bands within the genre.

Although the shoegaze scene was primarily centered in the UK, France also had a thriving shoegaze scene with its own unique sound.

One of the most prominent French shoegaze bands is Alcest. Formed in 2000 by multi-instrumentalist Neige, Alcest’s music is characterized by its dreamy, ethereal soundscapes and soaring melodies. Their debut album was released in 2007 but it’s its 2010 follow-up, “Écailles de Lune,” which is considered a masterpiece of the French shoegaze scene.

Another notable French shoegaze band is Lantlos. Formed in 2005, Lantlos’ music aims at creating an atmospheric, immersive soundscape with intricate guitar work. Their 2010 album, “Neon,” is considered a classic of the French shoegaze scene.

Other notable French shoegaze bands and artists include Les Discrets, Amesoeurs, Lunation Fall, Requin Chagrin. These bands and artists each brought their own unique style to the shoegaze scene, incorporating influences from post-punk, new wave, and electronic music.

Those artists continue to inspire today’s Shoegazing kids. As of 2025, contemporary artists like Stereolab, M83, Soko, The Limiñanas and Noisegun (French but based in the United States) are also carrying on the tradition of dreamy, atmospheric music with French shoegaze influences. These artists incorporate the sound and themes of French shoegaze into their own unique style, creating a modern interpretation of the genre.

Arguably, the best electronic shoegaze band right now is Beach House. Formed in Baltimore, USA in 2004 by Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, Beach House’s music is characterized by its use of hypnotic guitar and keyboard sounds as well as ethereal vocals. Their latest album is the beautiful Once Twice Melody released in 2022.

Formed in Reading, England in 1989, the British band Slowdive is a pioneer of the genre, having paved the way for the likes of Beach House. They released a great – eponymous – comeback LP in 2017, which was one of the best albums released that year.

Another prominent electronic shoegaze bands is M83. Formed in 2001 in France, M83’s music is characterized by its use of dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes and soaring melodies. Their 2008 album, Saturdays = Youth is considered a masterpiece of the electronic shoegaze genre.

One of the OG Shoegaze bands formed in Oxford, England in 1988, Ride started incorporating electronic sounds in its guitar landscape these last few years and the result was particularly successful on This Is Not A Safe Place (2019) and Weather Diaries (2017).

As of 2025, Electronic Shoegaze continues to inspire new artists today. Contemporary artists like Washed Out, Wild Nothing and Noisegun are carrying on the tradition of dreamy, atmospheric music with electronic shoegaze influences. These artists incorporate the sound and themes of electronic shoegaze into their own unique style, creating a modern interpretation of the genre.

DEPECHE MODE
Depeche Mode, formed in 1980 in Basildon, England, is one of the most successful synthpop bands of all time. The band’s early sound was characterized by upbeat, danceable rhythms and catchy melodies. Their music evolved over the years, becoming darker and more atmospheric with each release. Depeche Mode’s biggest hits include “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Personal Jesus,” and “Enjoy the Silence.”

NEW ORDER
New Order was formed in Manchester, England in 1980. The band was formed after the dissolution of Joy Division, following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. New Order’s sound was influenced by Joy Division’s post-punk style but incorporated electronic instruments and synthesizers. The band’s biggest hits include “Blue Monday,” “Bizarre Love Triangle,” and “True Faith.”

PET SHOP BOYS
Pet Shop Boys, formed in London in 1981, is a duo consisting of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Their sound combines danceable beats with clever lyrics and catchy melodies. Pet Shop Boys’ biggest hits include “West End Girls,” “It’s a Sin,” and “Always on My Mind.”

YAZOO
Yazoo, also known as Yaz, was a British synthpop duo consisting of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke. The band was active from 1981 to 1983 and released two albums before disbanding. Yazoo’s biggest hits include “Don’t Go” and “Only You.”

ERASURE
Erasure, formed in London in 1985, is a duo consisting of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke (formerly of Depeche Mode and Yazoo). Erasure’s music is known for its upbeat, danceable rhythms and Bell’s distinctive vocals. The band’s biggest hits include “A Little Respect,” “Oh L’amour,” and “Sometimes.”

A-HA
A-ha, formed in Oslo, Norway in 1982, is best known for their hit song “Take on Me.” The band’s sound is characterized by Morten Harket’s falsetto vocals and catchy synthpop melodies. A-ha’s other hits include “The Sun Always Shines on TV” and “Hunting High and Low.”

HUMAN LEAGUE
Human League, formed in Sheffield, England in 1977, is another influential synthpop band from the 1980s. The band’s sound was characterized by the use of synthesizers and drum machines, as well as Phil Oakey’s distinctive vocals. Human League’s biggest hits include “Don’t You Want Me,” “Human,” and “Fascination.”

SOFTCELL
Soft Cell, formed in Leeds, England in 1978, is best known for their hit song “Tainted Love.” The band’s sound is characterized by Marc Almond’s dramatic vocals and Dave Ball’s use of synthesizers. Soft Cell’s other hits include “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” and “Bedsitter.”

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (OMD)
OMD, formed in Wirral, England in 1978, is another influential synthpop band from the 1980s. The band’s sound was characterized by the use of synthesizers and electronic percussion.

ALPHAVILLE
Alphaville, formed in Münster in 1982, is a popular German synthpop band from the 1980s. The band’s sound was characterized by the use of synthesizers and catchy melodies. Alphaville’s biggest hits include “Forever Young,” “Big in Japan,” and “Dance With Me.”

VISAGE
Visage, formed in London in April 1979, is a British synthpop band featuring Steve Strange and Midge Ure. Its biggest hit was “Fade to Grey.”

ULTRAVOX
Alphaville, formed in London in April 1974, is a British New Wave synthpop band whose hits include “Dancing with Tears in my Eyes,” “Vienna” and “Hymn.” It was fronted from 1979 to 1986 by ex-Visage Midge Ure.

THE NEW GENERATION

With Synth-Pop being trendy again 40 years later, new Synth-Pop groups and artists are keeping the flame alive in 2025 including the Belarusian band Molchat Dolma, American dup Xeno & Oklander, Canadian artist Automelodi and Los Angeles-based French Synth-Pop artist Noisegun.

Folk, Progressive Rock, Hard Rock and Punk were popular in the 70’s replaced by New Wave and synthesizers in the 80’s. This was probably the most prolific decade when it comes to influential bands and singers who are still going strong to this day. The “French Touch” electronic music scene emerged in the 90’s, many of its pioneering artists gaining international fame, most particularly a couple of robots. In the 2000s, independent artists became trendy but nowadays, unsurprisingly, Hip Hop and mainstream pop are topping the charts, like in most parts of the world. New bands and artists inspired by the 80’s and 90’s are however providing a welcome alternative, bridging the gap between old and new generations.

While there are obviously plenty of famous and lesser-known French bands and artists worth a listen, we will here focus on a non-exhaustive selection of French musicians that are close to our musical roots, from the late 60’s to the current French music scene. So do not expect to hear about usual suspects such as the French Elvis (!), Edith Piaf, Brigitte Bardot or Rita Mitsuko but rather a subjective selection of Post-Punk, indie pop, electronic groups groups and singers.

Here is our selection of 21 French bands and artists that you should know in 2025. They sing in French, English or both. AIR

A pioneer of the French Touch electronic music scene, they found international success with hits such as “Sexy Boy”. They also produced Charlotte Gainsbourg’s first album.

BENJAMIN BIOLAY

One of the most acclaimed current French artists, Benjamin Biolay follows Serge Gainsbourg steps, creating romantic pop songs with a light Post-Punk flair and world music influences such as Tango. His latest release is Saint Clair and you should listen to Trash Yé-Yé and La Superbe.

DAFT PUNK

Once known as the future of French electro, Grammy award winning Daft Punk need no introduction, having found international recognition with the dance floor hit “Get Lucky”. We however prefer their debut album Homework.

JACQUES DUTRONC

Known for his ironic lyrics and nonchalance, Jacques Dutronc got his break as a Yé-Yé artist in the 60’s. Along his friend Serge Gainsbourg and then girlfriend Françoise Hardy, he is one the rare artists who remained relevant and influential throughout the years. Because he has too many great songs to just pick one, you should listen to one of this best-ofs. His latest release is Dutronc & Dutronc with his – jazz guitar extraordinaire – son Thomas whose mother is Françoise Hardy. Father and son are touring together in France promoting their new album.

ETIENNE DAHO

Acclaimed French artist Étienne Daho is undoubtedly the one responsible for bringing French Synth Pop into the mainstream thanks to a series of hits such as “Week-end à Rome”,”Tombé Pour la France”, ” Épaule Tattoo” and “Le grand Sommeil” which remain some of his best songs to date. Starting his career in 1978, he is still going strong to this day and has released some of my favorite French songs.

FEU! CHATTERTON

Slightly excentric like many other French artists – think M, La Femme, Phillipe Katerine – Paris-based Feu! Chatterton found critical acclaimed with its mix of pop, chanson francaise and synth-pop. Listen to their latest album Palais d’Argile.

SERGE GAINSBOURG

The most influential French singer-songwriter, Serge Gainsbourg’s career lasted 3 decades, from 60’s pop to jazz, reggae, rock, funk and electronica. He was not only known for his musical talent but also for his provocative persona. He died from a heart attack in 1991 and has gained a cult following around the world, from London to New York. There are way too many good albums and songs to recommend but my favorite song is probably “Requiem Pour Un Con” which was featured in the movie Le Pacha.

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG

The daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and British model singer Jane Birkin – Charlotte Gainsbourg is a world-renown actress who also gained critical acclaim for her 3 studio albums – listen to the Post-Punk fueled single “Dead Valentine” from her latest album Rest. She mostly sings in English and has made sure to develop her own style rather than imitating her dad.

ELLI & JACNO

Founded by ex The Stinky Toys and couple Elli Medeiros & Jacno, this French electro-pop band released 3 albums and a few singles including “Je T’Aime Tant”. They lasted 4 years, from 1980 to 1984, both of them continuing as solo artists, Elli Medeiros more particularly founding commercial success with her first solo album as well as singles like “A Bailar Calypso” and “Toi Mon Toit”.

INDOCHINE

New wave era band Indochine is probably the most enduring French group, finding success with its debut album and single “L’Aventurier”. After hitting a low and becoming has been in the 90s, they made a come back in 2002 with the acclaimed album Paradize. Since then, they have remained the best-selling French act, touring stadiums and releasing a succession of hit records. Some of their discography can be cringy at times, but Paradize is a solid pop-industrial album.

JAD WIO

New Wave Bondage-Cabaret band Jad Wio released the Synth-Pop album Contact in 1989 which turned them into a cult act thanks to erotic songs such as “L’amour à la hâte”, “Ophélie”. “Priscilla” and “Mad Sex”. With 6 albums under its belt, the band is still releasing music and playing shows.

LA FEMME

Mixing psychedelic sounds with a post-punk influence, La Femme features a cool French vibe that made it a cult act here in the US. Listen to the album Psycho Tropical Berlin.

THE LIMINANAS

A psychedelic garage French band fronted by a husband and wife, the Liminanas embrace a wide variety of musical roots from The Velvet Underground, Ennio Morricone, Serge Gainsbourg and The Cramps to create a very unique universe and exciting live performances. Check out the song “Calentita” and their brand new Best Of Electrified.

MANO NEGRA / MANU CHAO

One of the most popular live bands in the late 80’s to mid-90’s, this Gipsy Punk group was fronted by Manu Chao who found international fame as a solo artist, most particularly in Europe, Latin and South America. Check out Mano Negra’s King of the Bongos and Manu Chao’s.Clandestino.

MARQUIS DE SADE / MARQUIS / MARC SEBERG

One of the first major French Post-Punk bands, Marquis de Sade released 2 studio albums in the 80’s and are now back as Marquis with a new singer – Listen to “Back to Cruelty”. Their original singer Philippe Pascal who past away a few years ago was also the singer of one of our favorite French New Wave bands, Marc Seberg – listen to their 1990 album Le Bout des Nerfs.

MARTIN DUPONT

A French cold wave band from Marseille, Martin Dupont released 4 albums between 1984 and 1987 and gained recognition with the song “Inside Out”. They are making their comeback with a new album and international live shows in 2023. Listen to the album Hot Paradox.

NOIR DESIR

French rock band Noir Désir built its reputation on fiery live performances – I can attest having seen them several times – and a charismatic singer whose poetic lyrics were strongly influenced by French literature. Their career lasted 2 decades until the singer was found guilty of the death of this then girlfriend. They reached commercial success with the Grunge-infused album Tostaki but you should most particularly listen to Du Ciment Sous les Plaines and Des Visages Des Figures.

NOISEGUN

A French American artist born in Marseille and based in Los Angeles, newcomer Noisegun crosses musical and cultural borders, from Synthpop to Dark Wave, Shoegaze, Post-Punk with both French and English lyrics. Listen to Noisegun on Spotify.

NOUVELLE VAGUE

A group of French musicians making Bossa Nova versions 80’s New Wave songs might have sound like a weird idea but it turned out to be a recipe for success including collaborations with Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore. Listen to their cover of Public Image Limited’s “This Is Not A Love Song” from their first album.

PHOENIX

This Grammy award nominated French indie rock band from Versailles gained international recognition with famous songs such as “Listzomania”. Their singer Thomas Mars sings in fluent English and is married to Sophia Coppola. Their latest album is Alpha Zulu which they have been supporting with a worldwide tour.

XENO & OAKLANDER

Based in New York this Dark Wave duo is not – technically – French but is fronted by a French Norwegian artist who sings fluently in English and French language. Xeno & Oaklander’s best track might be “Afar” from their latest LP Vi/deo.

This of course a small selection as there are plenty of other – old and new – great bands such as Marc Seberg, Taxi Girl, Alain Bashung, Berruriers Noirs, Sebastien Tellier, M83, Phillipe Katerine, IAM, Minuit Machine, M, Clara Luciani (a one time La Femme member), Odezenne, Calypso Valois (the daughter Elli Medeiros & Jacno), Minuit (fronted by the daughter of Rita Mitsuko’s Catherine Ringer), Zazie and Gwendoline to name a few. AIR

A pioneer of the French Touch electronic music scene, they found international success with hits such as “Sexy Boy”.

While technically those 2 robots don’t sing, their guests do which is why they are listed here, needing no introduction, especially when it comes to their massive English language dance music hit “Get Lucky”.

LA FEMME

Mixing psychedelic 60’s sounds with a post-punk influence, La Femme features a cool French vibe that made it a cult act in the US. Listen to the song “Cool Colorado”.

CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG

Coming from French music scene royalty – her dad is Serge Gainsbourg and her mom Jane Birkin – Charlotte Gainsbourg is a successful actress and acclaimed musician since her first album produced by Air – check out “Dead Valentine”.

KAS PRODUCT

A French coldwave band which sounds made it to the United States – Listen to “Take Me Tonight”.

THE LIMINANAS

LITTLE NEMO

Mixing the sounds of a basic drum machine, big bass line with guitar arpeggios, Parisian band Little Nemo was strongly influenced by early goth bands, singing with a French accent. “A Day Out Of Time” is their best known song.

MARQUIS DE SADE

One of the first major French Post-Punk bands, Marquis de Sade released 2 studio albums in the 80’s and are now back as Marquis with a new singer – Listen to “Back to Cruelty”.

MARTIN DUPONT

This late singer released 6 albums between 1998 and 2015. His biggest hit was his first single “When my tears run cold”.

SERPENT

The new Funk Post-Punk band from French Post-Punk artist Lescop – listen to “Distant Call”.

STEREOLAB

Technically, only the singer  Lætitia Sadier is French but she sings in English and we love them so listen to “French Disko”.

XENO & OAKLANDER

This Dark Wave duo sings in English and French, delivering dark electronic songs such as “Afar”.

Of course this list is non-exhaustive, other artists and bands having released a few songs in English here and there, usually covers. We could mention Françoise Hardy, rock music bands Noir Désir or Indochine but despite being some of the best-selling French bands, they are mostly known for their French classics.

Strongly influenced by the likes of Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cure and Depeche Mode, these French goth bands created what would be called the French Coldwave scene in early 1980s. In case you were wondering, the term cold wave was used by the French to describe any dark Post-Punk subgenre.

Because most of these bands lacked originality and insisted on singing in English with an accent, the local Goth rock scene was never really taken seriously and failed to take off. A few bands were however able to leave a mark, some even making it to North America. More surprisingly, with the recent emergence of Dark Wave and New Goth subculture, a new generation of French-speaking bands has been embracing the Goth scene.

Here is a selection of past and present French Goth bands worth the listen, as of 2025.

TRISOMIE 21

Probably the most influential French band coming from the 80’s Cold Wave scene, this duo is known for its dark melodies, post-punk, synth-driven and industrial sounds. They were signed to Belgian label Play It Again Sam and are still active, releasing studio albums and touring. “The Last Song” and “La Fete Triste” are probably their best-known songs.

MARTIN DUPONT

A band from Marseille – where yours truly is from -, Martin Dupont is a French Cold Wave band which released 4 albums between 1984 and 1987 and gained recognition with popular song “Inside Out”.

KAS PRODUCT

Kas Product was a Cold Wave / Electropunk duo – Spatsz on keyboards + Mona Soyoc on vocals & guitar – which sound was reminiscent of Siouxsie and Soft Cell. They released 4 studio albums and performed on and off until 2017, a couple years before Spatsz passed away. Their best track is the Suicide-influenced “Take Me Tonight”.

LITTLE NEMO

They were part of the “Touching Pop” scene along Coldwave bands Mary Goes Round Asylum Party. They released 4 studio albums between 1989 and 2013, singing in both English and French.

MARY GOES ROUND

Starting with Sunset, am enjoyable debut album strongly influenced by the Sisters of Mercy, French duo Mary Goes Round then changed musical genre to embrace 70s psychedelic rock music. They went through various lineups and released 4 albums between 1989 and 1991 before the singer embarked on a solo career. They were part of the Touching Pop movement.

ASYLUM PARTY

A gothic trio with dark, atmospheric sounds and melodies reminiscent of early Cure, Asylum Party released 3 albums and best known for their song “Julia”. They were also considered a Touching Pop band and released 3 albums from 1988 to 1990.

CHARLES DE GOAL

Somewhere between minimal wave and electronic punk rock, Charles de Goal released 6 albums with various lineups from 1980 to 2006. Unlike their counterpart were mostly singing in French.

GUERRE FROIDE

This dark Post-Punk band from Lille has been releasing albums on and off since the early 80s, undergoing various lineup changes. They sing in French and one of their most memorable tracks is “L’espérance”.

THE NEW GENERATION

Surprisingly, 40 years later, the French Goth Darkwave scene is making somewhat of a comeback, the 80s sound making a comeback all around the world.

French American Coldwave duo Xeno & Oaklander is probably leading this new wave thanks to its haunting dark electronic – shall we say Dark Wave – vibe and, most particularly, the French singles “Sheen” and “Afar”. Another great French-speaking synthpop coldwave musical project Automelodi from Montréal, French Canada – their minimal synth single “La Poussiere” is one of my favorites. If you’re looking form something less minimalist and more eclectic, you might enjoy Grand Blanc from Metz. Last not but not least, Los Angeles-based French-American artist Noisegun blends old school Goth, Synth-Pop, Dark Wave, Shoegaze and Industrial music since early 2000s.
